When I was a kid I told my aunt to shut up.  It’s the only time I remember using those words in my entire life.

She was so upset, more upset than I ever remember seeing another adult be. IMG_8328

I don’t know if I learned it right then or over time, however she made certain I understood that we could ask almost anything of each other, other than this.

My daughter and I watched the first presidential debate on a street blocked off, with a giant screen mounted on the side of a building, with hundreds or maybe a thousand others.  It was peaceful, funny, engaging.

I thought about my aunt and how important it is we all listen to each other, honor each other.

Everyone keeps talking about how bad off we are, however, what I witnessed tonight is America at it’s finest.

Democracy and freedom of speech is an incredible gift.
